First Christian Church, Augusta, Georgia

~   Church Tour - Page One   ~

Augusta, Georgia [1]

Approaching Augusta from any one of several directions, you can see the tall white spire rising from the corner of Seventh and Greene Streets. [1] It designates a true landmark. The church complex fronts Greene Street. Seventh Street runs perpendicular to the Savannah River and traverses Reynolds, Broad, Ellis, Greene, and Telfair Streets as well as Walton Way.

[2]

There is a marble memorial to Mrs Tubman in the median of Greene Street. [2] You know you are in the right spot because the church sits on the north side of the monument. [3]

           Steeples [4]

Park and leave your car but before you reach the church property, you will feel dwarfed by the tall steeple. It is to your left as you face the front of the church. A smaller steeple is located to the right of the larger one. [4]

Wilson & Lamar Houses [5]

Church Complex [6]

Looking south along Seventh Street, you will see the Lamar House and Woodrow Wilson Boyhood Home. [5] Further down the street is the James Brown Arena, previously known as the Augusta-Richmond County Civic Center. Looking north along Seventh Street and toward the river you can see Fort Discovery that is located on the Augusta Riverwalk. As you look at the church along Greene Street, you will see the sanctuary, the fellowship hall, and the manse or parsonage. [6] A courtyard sits adjacent and to the right of the sanctuary. It is shaded by a large magnolia tree. [7]

Courtyard Tree [7]

Surveying the courtyard area from the sidewalk, you will notice a brick walk that leads to a second entrance. [8] This door opens to a foyer or entrance hall that is situated between the sanctuary and fellowship hall. You will also see a welcoming bench sitting beneath the tree. [9]

Tree beneath Magnolia Tree [9]

Upon further examination, you will find a memorial stone that tells the story of Mrs Tubman planting the magnolia tree at the time this church building was erected. [10] Closer to the street and sidewalk is the Georgia historical marker.  [11] Placed here in 2005 it tells a little bit about the history of First Christian Church of Augusta and some of the first people who helped form the church back in 1835.

Now that you have had a chance to view the grounds, you may be wondering about the church's architecture. It was built in a Victorian Romanesque Style with Gothic and English influence. Having been designed by D. B. Woodruff, the church and buildings were built by T. O. Brown and William F. Goodrich. There is beauty and symbolism throughout. Let's take a look inside.
