First Christian Church, Augusta, Georgia ~   Church Tour - Page Three   ~ Continue through the double doors to the right of the pulpit. In this side foyer you will find more tributes to Mrs Tubman. [28]  [28]              [29] One gives a brief glimpse of her life and another is small rendition of a portrait painted of her when she was a young lady. There is also a picture of the first Christian church building that was located on Reynolds Street. [29]   Continue through the next door and you are entering the fellowship hall or lecture room. To the left you will see a podium and a pair of stairs. The baptistery is directly behind the podium. [30] The stairs lead to Sunday school rooms that were added in the 1900s. This large room is presently used for church gatherings such as Sunday fellowship dinners. [31]  [30]             [31]                        [32] A suspended ceiling had been added years ago but was removed in the 1990s revealing the original beauty of the wood trusses.  [32]   [33]  [34] Exit through the courtyard entrance. [33] Notice the supporting buttresses on the outside walls. [34] Feel the cool air that the magnolia tree brings. Follow the walkway to the manse. [35]  [35] First built to house the church minister and his family, it now plays host to the church office. The parlor was used for women's meetings in past days, and the manse played a crucial role in the 1990s when the church needed money for large restoration projects. [36] What was known as the Emily Shoppes came into existence where goods and meals were sold to help finance the much needed upgrades.
