Dr. Manning took the helm of First Christian Church, Augusta, Georgia in 1989. He and his lovely wife, Sue, came here from Winder, Georgia where Dr. Manning had been minister for many years. Dr. Manning was born and reared in Oklahoma and has been the minister of churches in Oklahoma, Texas, Tennessee, Alabama, and Georgia.
At the time of his arrival in Augusta, the church congregation was very small and had just begun the colossal task of restoring the church building used for worship. This is the same building that was built by Mrs. Emily Tubman in the mid 1870s, and it is the same one that is used for worship today.
Dr. Manning stepped in and helped guide the restoration effort to the point where it is today-a beautiful church building. Many great wonders have come to fruition under his leadership. In September 2005 the smaller steeple was replaced after many, many years of absenteeism. While not the largest task to be accomplished during his tenure at First Christian Church, this event was symbolic as a crowning achievement for the minister and congregation for the many years of hard work. He will tell you, "We have come a long way."
In December 2006, Dr. Manning retired from his duties at First Christian, but we have to use the term 'retired' carefully because in all honesty, Dr. Manning was retired when he first filled the vacancy in Augusta. After his last retirement, Dr. Manning became Pastor Emeritus, and is still an active member of the congregation. |
