First Christian Church, Augusta, GA

~   Restoration   ~

Buildings are a lot like humans. Both show signs of aging as the years pass. The church complex is a little over 132 years old and is in need of some restoration work. A definition of the word restore from the American Heritage Dictionary is "to bring back to original condition." Restoration projects at First Christian Church are aimed to do just that, restore the buildings to their original state.

Over the past few decades, several major projects have been achieved with the help of the congregation and community. We would not be here had it not been for this support. In the 1980s, a major restoration project began with the stained glass windows. They were restored and storm-proofed in order to preserve and protect them.

In the 1990s, one of the many projects was the restoration of the lecture room or fellowship hall. This project culminated with the removal of the suspended ceiling and the revealing of the beautiful wood trusses that you see today. In the sanctuary, the walls have been restored and painted and the electrical circuitry has been rewired. The pipe organ has also been restored. The list goes on, but you get the idea that these were major undertakings.

There are projects being planned for the next few years. One major piece of property that needs attention is the manse. It was built at the same time as the rest of the church complex and was used to house the pastor and his family. Today, it serves as the home of the church office with some of the rooms being utilized for meetings, etc. One of the first tasks is to replace the old and original electrical wiring. This building has taken a backseat to some of the other projects of the past, but it is just as important to restore it to its original grandeur.

Another big task looming in the horizon is the restoration of the very large steeple that can be seen throughout Augusta. Keep in mind that these are only a few of the projects that are on the restoration list.

How can you help? First, there is a kick-off dinner planned for Saturday, May 24, 2008 to be held in the church's fellowship hall from 6-8pm.  This special night is the beginning of the 'Angels on the Roof ' fundraiser and will feature a seated dinner with entertainment. There will be prizes and auction items. Ticket prices are as follows:

$30 Per individual
$50 Per couple
$10 Each child 12 and under

See Mary Galloway, Ponda Holt, or Nila Wicker for tickets. Remember to get them before May 23.

An online auction of household items and collectibles is in progress. If you have something that you would like to donate, please bring your donation to the church or contact Nila Wicker at 706-396-0098 (work). The donated items need to be in good condition, and the restoration committee is asking that the items be valued at $100 or more to cover auction expenses. These donations should be tax deductible, so please keep your receipts.

Presently, there are four categories of restoration. Monetary donations are being accepted for each category, or your donation may remain undesignated.
