We welcome the Rev. Charles Cochran
First Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) of Augusta formally installed the Rev. Charles Cochran on 28 OCT 2007 as its new pastor. Church members, friends, and a contingent of fellow Disciples from Augusta’s Central Christian Church were on hand for the formal ceremony at which Regional Minister Ray Miles presided.
Pastor Charlie earned a Masters of Divinity degree in May from Erskine Theological Seminary in Due West, South Carolina. He was ordained in July at Guyton Christian Church (DOC), where he first became a Disciple in the early 1990s.
He is a second-career minister, having spent most of his professional life as a print journalist. Most recently, he was a reporter and editor at the Savannah (GA) Morning News, where he worked for nine years. He left the newspaper in September 2006 to complete seminary.
“The good Lord has a record of making good use of tax collectors and other sinners,” Pastor Charlie notes. “I figure he can also make use of an old reporter.”
He has been married for 15 years to Julia Cochran, a licensed counselor whom Pastor Charlie describes as one of the smartest (and sweetest) people he knows. Julia holds a Ph.D. in counseling from the University of Georgia.
Charlie also has a 22-year-old stepdaughter, Frances Ross, a paralegal employed by a law office in Athens, GA.
